Over the last several years, Nanaimo has quietly become one of the more bike friendly communities on Vancouver Island. More people are choosing to ride for commuting, exercise, recreation, and simply getting around town, and the city has continued investing in infrastructure to support that shift.I have personally been getting more into biking myself lately, especially with my e bike, and honestly it has given me a whole new appreciation for the city. It has been a really fun way to explore Nanaimo from a different perspective. What makes Nanaimo unique is that cycling here can look different depending on what kind of rider you are. Some people are using paved multi use trails to get to work or school, while others are heading into the forest for mountain biking adventures. Either way, there are more options today than there were even a few years ago.For a city built on hills, Nanaimo is becoming surprisingly efficient to bike around, especially with the growth of e bikes and the continued expansion of bike lanes and connected trail systems.
• The E and N Trail
• The Parkway Trail
• The Harbourfront Walkway
• Walley Creek Trail
• Westwood Lake trailsThese trails give cyclists the ability to move through the city without always relying on busy roads. That makes biking feel more approachable for families, casual riders, and people who may not feel comfortable riding in traffic. The E and N Trail especially has become a major connector through Nanaimo, linking different neighbourhoods with a relatively smooth and efficient route.
The Trail System Is One of Nanaimo’s Biggest Strengths
One of the things that makes Nanaimo such a great biking city is the amount of trail access available right inside the community. The City of Nanaimo currently has more than 180 kilometres of trails connecting parks, neighbourhoods, and major areas throughout the city. Some of the most popular cycling friendly routes include:• The E and N Trail
